Beard and Brawn

Hi, please introduce yourself and your business.

We are Dan Carriere and Kyle Von Riesen and we are the owners and makers of Beard and Brawn Beard Oil Company. Dan is the product maker and Kyle is the resident barber.

 

Why did you start crafting business and how does your passion still drive your business today?

We started the company out of a desire to have beard products that were derived from natural ingredients for our own use. Once we formulated our own blend of high-quality carrier oils and a blend of essential oils that we prefered, we thought other guys may want to use these products too. In 2015, our business began! 

 

At what point did you realize this is what you wanted to pursue and that the potential to make a living from it was there or was there a turning point or what made you want to switch this from a hobby to more of a business?

Since our beginning, we have always had Beard and Brawn as a side hustle. Dan is a Winnipeg Police Officer and Kyle is a Hairstyling/Barber Teacher. This business has been a great outlet to have our guy-time and to make some money in the process.  

 

What brought you to selling your products with Handmade Saskatchewan?

Right when we started our business, handmade markets were becoming very popular and we soon realized that there were not a lot of handmade items geared toward men. It has been a great adventure to be part of the handmade community and to bring a masculine vibe to these markets. Because we don’t have a brick and mortar store, we thought it would be great to partner with other local businesses like Handmade Saskatchewan to bring products for men to purchase themselves or to receive as gifts from others.

 

What do you attribute your success to?

I believe that our success has been a combination of making products that are naturally derived, and to solve a need that takes care of a man’s beard. I feel like we’ve been able to tap into three markets. Natural and Local, Men’s grooming, and a great gift for men. As men with beards, we felt there was a need in the market for natural men’s beard care. 

 

If you could speak face to face with yourself when you first started, what pearls of wisdom would you impart?

Don’t underestimate the principle of being real and authentic with your customers; they appreciate quality and transparency. 

 

What new products have you been working on? Any you would like to highlight?

Our two scents of Beer’d Wash (yes it has beer in it and no you cannot drink it),have become  very popular items especially for a first-time beard product user. I would say that our most popular items, however, are our Beard Creams, which come in three different scents. These three scents were taken from the most popular sellers from our classic oil collection.  

 

 

How has the pandemic affected your business?

We have been fortunate during the pandemic because we already have a loyal customer base who know our products and their quality. However, one thing that this pandemic has affected is our testers. We have always supplied testers for our retailers, but because of new sanitation procedures those testers have had to be removed from their shelves.  

 

Thank you for your time! Any last closing comments?

Whether it be the masculine scent of the blended oils or just a clean looking beard, we have happily learned that women also love Beard and Brawn. When we started we had no idea that 80% of our first time customers would be women buying for men. The quality and love for our products turned these men into regular customers. We have the type of product that is both loved by our customers and those closest to them. We always appreciate the people who have taken a chance on two guys making quality beard care and we hope to continue to satisfy our customers!
